Thomas Peatman, M.D.
Sports Medicine:
Arthroscopy of the hip, knee and
shoulder;
Joint Replacement
Dr. Peatman
combines his expertise in
non-surgical and operative
sports medicine with advanced
techniques in joint replacement
for degenerative hips and knees.
He
completed his undergraduate
studies at the University of
California, Berkeley. He earned
his Doctor of Medicine at the
University of California,
Irvine, then completed his
surgical internship and
Orthopedic Surgery residency at
the University of Illinois,
Chicago.
Dr. Peatman
joined the U.S. Navy during
residency, and served for 5
years afterwards. He was
stationed in Naples, Italy;
Pensacola, FL; and Jacksonville,
FL. These five years were
oriented primarily to sports
medicine, though he also
practiced general orthopedics
and flight surgery/aviation
medicine.
As one
of the two orthopedic surgeons
for the Oakland Athletics, Dr. Peatman maintains expertise in
all aspects of sports medicine.
Helping the "home team" stay
healthy through conservative and
surgical intervention has kept
Dr. Peatman up-to-date in the
evolving field of sports
medicine. He brings the same
skills to the weekend athlete
that he uses on Golden
Glove-ers.
In addition
to the common techniques of Knee
and Shoulder Arthroscopy, Dr.
Peatman is skilled in Hip
Arthroscopy. This advanced
procedure allows
minimally-invasive access to the
hip for sports injuries as well
as for early arthritis in the
middle-aged patient with
soft-tissue tears. Very few
surgeons in the area have
experience in this procedure.
For those
individuals who are less active
due to worn joints, he provides
cutting-edge options in joint
replacement, including the
Anterior Approach (MIS) to the
hip, Hip Resurfacing, and
partial knee replacement. These
techniques allow the best
procedure to be paired with each
individual patient. Using a
Multi-Modal pain management
approach, these surgical
interventions are now much less
painful than in the past.
To
stay at the "top of his game,"
Dr. Peatman pursues advanced
training and continued education
at meetings with the nations’
top surgeons, such as the Major
League Baseball Team Physicians
meeting and the annual American
Association of Hip and Knee
Surgeons meeting, in addition to
the annual AAOS Academy
meetings.
